I take art lessons, and I閳ユ獫e been asked to fill in for another model for another class. I閳ユ獫e never done it before, and not only was I slightly uncomfortable, the teacher kept remarking sexually oriented comments. He started by saying to the class "finally a hot model"; I閳ユ獫e heard say to a student to observe my hard nipples. He topped it off by saying that my boobs are too big and that with my blond hair I look like a porn star and not so much like a model, but that they (the students) will have to work it out. When we had a break and I was about to get dressed some of the students said, jokingly, that I shouldn't bother- it's a hot day so I better keep my clothes off, and the jerk laughed hysterically. Is that sexual harassment? Should I complain about him? What should I say?

You definitely should complain about this. I'd suggest starting with the college's Ombudsman (person who resolves disputes). If your school doesn't have an Ombudsman, then I'd suggest going straight to the Dean or Provost).

Regarding Chris's Answer below that suggests going to the Chair of the Department. I considered that, too, when putting my above list of people to contact. The reason I hesitated to suggest the Department Chair is that she or he may have been involved in hiring the instructor. An Ombudsman is intended as an advocate for students, so I think that is really the best person. I think the Dean or Provost are better than the Department Chair because they are probably better informed regarding harrassment policies (Dept Chairs are often professors with little administrative knowledge or experience) and are less likely to have personal/profession ties to the offending professor.

It would be interesting to know if the instructor is adjunct faculty or full time faculty and whether he has tenure (if he's an Associate or Full Professor, then he probably does). My guess is that this is an adjunct (i.e., part-time) faculty member who just teaches a class here and there.

Incidentally, I should add that I'm an art professor myself and strongly urge you to follow this up.

Here's another question..can you post a pic?

:) Report It

If this is a school, you should make a formal grievance to the director of the school. You have a right to work without being sexually harassed and you should have said so at the time, put your clothes on and left. Since the jerk didn't touch you, you probably have no criminal case. But contact a lawyer to see if there's any recourse at all. Good luck.

That professor's behavior was completely unprofessional and out of line and he clearly set the tone for other students to harass you - I would complain about his behavior to the chair of the art department if I were you.

Your instructor acted very inappropriately. I have done artistic nude modeling as well for my professor when I was in college.

I wouldn't model for his class ever again. You need to set your boundaries and I would seek out his supervisors and tell them how uncomfortable he made you feel. He sounds not only ignorant but perverted. Good luck!

Yes i think you should complain about it. I think that type of comment is sexual harrasement. My wife would have a hernia if she found out that I was in an Art class and I was trying to paint a nude woman. I would do my best not to stay. It is a good thing I would never have to do that in game design. She would want to choke me for even looking. A woman like you can be a model. Their isn't really any type of features you must have to be a model other than almost perfect skin. I think the teacher wants to sleep with you. I just do not like the idea of painting a nude woman and I do not think I need skills like that in Game Design. Game Design is digital art anyway. If i wanted too, then i would paint my over weight wife. I think that it would be inappropriate for a male that is married or has a girlfriend to look upon a nude model. That is what I think.

omg. in a figure drawing class you should always be treated better than the best, with respect. It is a very difficult thing you are doing. that is not proper ettiquette, and IS harassment. If you're getting paid for that, it is a job, and you should report that jerk. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. It sounds like a really low class place. Trust me, that should never be happening. I feel so bad for you. I'm sure you are a wonderful and pretty girl.

I think if you are going to be a nude model you have to be a little bit less sensitive when someone says something about your body.

I would tell him to tolerate the big boobs, it ain't your fault and all that you are doing is playing cards with the hand you were dealt.

I'll echo what the others said. That's just wrong on so many levels. Even if he kept his thoughts to himself, as a art teacher he should realize bodies come in all sizes and shapes. Exposure to variety is great for any artist, and if you're on the buxom side, so what! He should have just been happy you were able to fill in (and I assume it was short notice) when they were short a model. It's pretty obvious that the students comment was set up by the instructors attitude. He needs to be reprimanded along with the instructor.

I'm sorry your first shot at a figure model happened that way. I've never seen behavior like that in my 30 yrs of art modeling. There just isn't any excuse.
