Male. growing out hair problems. help?!?!?!!?

Ok, Im tryingto grow out my hair maybe to like shoulder length or shorter no longer then that.

but everytime I have tried growing it,(still working on it) my hair from the back gets curly kinda and it kinda look all pooofy and from the front and top it looks all straight and flat, so kinda looks funny you know? and then on the side of the top it kinda looks like I have a bump of hair that is like popping out like a lil pooofey not over exxagerated. also my hair is thick and I hate that.

How can I grow out the hair and reduce the curly big poofey from the back?? should I just cut it all off and let it grow from the front? and then let it grow out from the back and straighten it everyday???

also, what product or what can I do to make my hair not thick I want it nice and silky lol. this is how my hair looks as if now

alot of guys think that it's really cool to have long hair, like surfer hair or whatever, but in reality, very few guys can pull it off. sorry, but I doubt your one of them, most guys are just meant to have short hair. alot of kids at my school have long hair, and most of the time it just looks weird.
