Can chlorine lighten hair?

I dyed my blonde hair brown in Movember [yeah, big mistake] %26amp;I've been swimming a lot. It's getting lighter, and I was wondering if it's the chlorine? Would it totally lighten my hair back to blonde?

Can chlorine lighten hair?

Yes, it can. Your situation is a little deeper than that though. Anytime you are coloring your hair lighter (before you went brown) you are damaging the cuticle and removing the natural pigments. When you color it back darker-the pigment being artificial doesn't hold as well not to mention your cuticle is wide open at this point and nothing to hold your color in. The chlorine being a chemical which will also dry out hair as well as build up on your hair will lighten hair usually in combo with sunlight. The chlorine is just helping to strip the color out faster.

I come across color fading often in clients that go from coloring their hair blonde back to a darker shade. It usually takes 2 times to get the color to stay. In your case since you don't mind it fading it's ok. I'd protect you hair from the chlorine as much as possible though. Chlorine is nasty on hair and it may begin causing your hair to have a greenish tint.

Can chlorine lighten hair?

Yes, but it will also eat it all away. Do not use it. Go to a hair care prefessional and ask them to bleach your hair.

But it will looked bleached and even greenish sometimes.

Can chlorine lighten hair?

Well, the chlorine lightens your hair but it wont turn it back completely blonde. If you want your blonde hair back you should get your hair bleached.

Can chlorine lighten hair?

yeah when i swam in high school we spent 4-5 days in the pool and by the end of the year my hair went from dark brown to gray and strawy. shampoos like utlraswim can help slow the process down a bit, but not much. wearing a cap helps a lot if it bothers you, i didnt really care though.

Can chlorine lighten hair?

Yes, chlorine definitely messes up your hair color, dyed or not. It will turn it a greenish or orange tint, but it will not look right. It is very drying and hard on your hair too.

One of my past hairdressers told me that you should use a clarifying shampoo immediately after swimming in chlorine. This will help remove some of the chemicals. Unfortunately, it is also harsh on your hair if you use it frequently. You should always use a good conditioner as well.

To be safest, she advised wearing a swim cap (yes, I know...yuk).
